Does God Laugh?

The video immediately made me think of a recent discussion within Mormonism on the uniqueness of the Mormon description of a weeping God.

  1. I guess I don’t get around enough. Is Teryl Givens saying that the concept of a God who laughs or cries is uniquely Mormon?

  2. Along with the weeping God, this gentleman also seems to believe in a concept of Sovereignty and free will that Mormons could identify with.

  3. I should brush up on my contemporary Judaism. All the orthodox Jews I know sound a lot more like calvinists.

  4. Yes, Mormonisms favorite quote about God from Protestantism, “…most loving, gracious, merciful, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin; the rewarder of them that diligently seek Him…”

Or is it, “…without body, parts, or passions…”

  5. Christian,

I honestly can’t fathom how any orthodox Jew would ever sound like a Calvinist. Outside of notions of election (which have almost no overlap), there isn’t much there that is common.

  6. Ya David, I guess there’s that whole irresistible grace thing and obviously the Jesus thing. I was thinking more about unconditional election and the Sovereignty of God – which concepts I hear in orthodox Jewish conversations – even if using other terms to describe a similar concept. But, I know its a reach.
